Grants to Green

PUBLIC BROADCASTING ATLANTA’s Green Initiatives

At Public Broadcasting Atlanta (PBA) we are committed to “going green.” We know that adopting greener practices and policies, conserving energy and building green can not only positively impact our organization’s energy use and efficiency, but also positively impact the environment and the communities in which we live and work.

We have undertaken a number of green activities here at PBA. For example, we have:

  • Participated in a complete energy audit of our building conducted by Southface thanks to the Grants to Green award we received in January, 2010.
  • Replaced all incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents, a recommendation made in our assessment report.
  • Confirmed that all computer workstations are set to hibernate after a certain period of time.
  • Recycling was already a part of PBA operations, including paper, plastic and aluminum. Our internal website reminds everyone at PBA to Reduce, Re-use and Recycle.

Through a grant from the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, we have assessed our facility’s energy use and efficiency and received recommendations for how to improve efficiency. These recommendations ranged from changing light bulbs to installing more efficient heating and cooling systems. The good news is many of the improvements have a short payback period due to the savings realized in utility costs.

Launched in 2008, Grants to Green gives nonprofits the opportunity to renovate or build healthier work places that are energy and water efficient and environmentally efficient and provides environmentally focused knowledge and funding to strengthen nonprofits in the Atlanta region. The founding partners of Grants to Green are The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta providing expertise in grant making, and Southface providing expertise in energy efficiency.

PBA is currently evaluating the recommendations in the Southface assessment report and is seeking contractor bids for many of them, including improving insulation, installing programmable thermostats, and making additional lighting modifications throughout our building. As these are implemented, we will continue to report our progress as well as our energy and cost savings.
