Examples of graffiti date back to ancient Greece, though some cite prehistoric cave drawings as the earliest graffiti.

The highly stylized lettering of modern graffiti can be traced back to tags found around Philadelphia in the 1960's and most famously around New York City in the early 1970's when artists known only by their tag names TAKI 183 and Tracy 168 (the number referring to the street where they lived). The form quickly spread and was appropriated as one of the Four Elements of Hip Hop (along with rapping, DJing, and break dancing).
