Skyla Powers, left, and Lena Johnson are fencers at Nellya Fencers Club in Atlanta. The two are regular sparring companions. These sounds are the metallic clashes of their fencing foils coupled with the electronic "beep" of the scoring machines, as the fencers make "touches" during their bouts. The three kinds of Olympic fencing includes foil, epee and--the girls' specialty--saber, in which the weapon is used primarily to slash, with points scored for touches above the waist. The club has trained several champion Olympic fencers, going back to 1980.
