This weekend, Robert Spano conducts the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Chorus in concert at Carnegie Hall. Later this month, he’ll conduct the ASO in a debut performance of Wynton Marsalis’s “American Symphony.” It was in September, eight years ago that Robert Spano began his tenure as ASO music director, and in conversation with WABE’s Lois Reitzes, he reflected on an unforeseen aspect of that moment in his career.

The Talent Development Program of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra targets promising young African American and Latinos studying classical music. The TDP’s annual Musicale takes place at the Woodruff Arts Center this Sunday. WABE’s Lois Reitzes recently met with harpist Angelica Hairston and violinist Chelsea Sharp for a conversation about the program and their roles in it.

Today is the birthday of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich. If that sounds familiar that’s because he was the inventor of the sandwich. Story has it that he was so hesitant to leave his card game that he asked for some meat to be placed between two pieces of bread… and history was born in that moment. Could be even right now you’re eating a sandwich at this noon hour all because John Montagu. Well it got us to thinking where is a good place in Atlanta to get a sandwich and we struck upon a little shop in Atlanta called Muss and Turners… we stopped in to talk with Sous Chef, Greg Baker.
