People have been using arts and entertainment to advertise themselves and their products for centuries. A visit to the Atlanta History Center reveals examples of product placement that date back to the battles of the American Civil War—as part of the Center’s “War in Our Backyards” Exhibit. The exhibit runs until Fall 2012.

In this era in which the hamburger has become haute restaurant cuisine, food writer Helen Cauley and Host John Lemley cook up a different kind of burger—a turkey burger so good, John says, you may never go back to beef.

Mike’s Turkey Burgers Yields: 10 servings

Ingredients

2 Tbsp Olive Oil

2 Tbsp Garlic, chopped

1 Pound Sauteed Mushrooms, sliced
1 bag Spinach, cleaned

2 Tbsp Dry Sherry

2.5 pounds Turkey, ground
6 oz Bread Crumbs, fresh
1 Egg
3 Tbsp Mixed Italian Herbs, chopped: Chives, Oregano, Basil, Rosemary
2 Tbsp Dijon Mustard
1 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
1 Tbsp Sriracha Sauce
1 tsp Kosher Salt
1/2 tsp White Pepper

3 Tbsp Butter
10 Slices Provolone
10 Brioche Buns or Kaiser Rolls, toasted

Directions

  1. Saute garlic, mushrooms and spinach in olive oil. Deglaze pan with sherry. Simmer 2 minutes. Reserve.
  2. Gently combine all additional ingredients including reserved saute mixture.
  3. Form into 10 even sized patties.
  4. Lightly coat griddle in butter and sear both sides of the patties until evenly browned.
  5. Finish patties in 350 degree oven on a aluminum foil lined sheet tray until internal burger temperature reaches 165 degrees F.
  6. Prior to serving, top with provolone cheese and melt.
  7. Slice and toast lightly buttered brioche bun or kaiser roll. Serve with choice of toppings.

Soccer players are among the world’s most fit athletes, and the Atlanta Silverbacks, the city’s North American Soccer League Team, are no exception. The Silverbacks have been doing well this season, so it was a bit nerve-wracking for host John Lemley when the team invited him to spend a day training with them.
A recent warm, muggy morning found him driving to the Silverbacks Stadium near Spaghetti Junction to don a warm-up uniform and cleats. Things began with Rodrigo Rios, the team’s director, telling him what to expect.

Most street art—or graffiti, or however you choose to characterize it—is meant to be eye-catching, with wild, colorful letters and designs on walls and bridges. But one Atlanta street artist is trading on artwork that isn’t always easy to spot. He goes by the name Catlanta, and WABE’s Myke Johns managed to track him down and spend an afternoon hiding cardboard and magnetic cats with the elusive figure.

If you’d like to join in on the fun, you can follow Catlanta on Twitter and become a fan of his on Facebook. Happy hunting!
