Museum of Funeral Memorabilia
Abb Dickson has small museum of funeral memorabilia behind his funeral home. The large window that opens onto the parking lot means that you can view the entire collection without leaving your car - hence the World’s only Drive By Funeral Museum.
The collection includes a Horse Drawn Hearse, used to transport Alexander H.Stephens, the Vice President of the Confederacy. It also has a secret compartment that was used to smuggle escaping slaves north.
Perhaps the saddest item is a small Civil War issue Iron Casket. Many of the soldiers fighting for the South were only 12 to 16 years of age. It could be filled with ice and sent home to a loved one for burial. It also has a tiny spigot on the bottom to allow the release of water from the melting ice.
While you’re here don’t forget to take a look at Margaret Mitchell’s Playhouse which is behind the parking lot.
The museum has been visited by curious people from Europe to Japan and has been written up on the web. If you meet Abb ask him about his other career as a magician with David Copperfield, as well as his Hollywood film work. A fascinating guy!
