The Georgia Magic Club
The Georgia Magic Club is a local “ring” of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, the world’s largest magic organization. The members gather each month to try out new tricks and to learn from each other; not only magic techniques, but also show-craft and business tips. The Georgia Magic Club has a large number of members who, like club president Debbie Leifer, are professional magicians, but there are also semi-professionals and enthusiastic amateurs as well.
The Georgia Magic Club also embraces younger members, welcoming them as the future of the craft. One of the magicians who performed for us, Ken Scott, has been a member since childhood.
While these illusionists are very reluctant to reveal their secrets, there is an exception each month. Every meeting includes a mini-lecture on a technique or trick. But this is for members only!
Then, the meetings conclude with performances, many of them revolving around a given theme. When This Is Atlanta visited, the theme was magic inspired by television and movies. And while our intent was to put magic on television, we were reminded by Joe M. Turner that magic is an art best experienced live!
